Eldon ECL475 B-Flat Clarinet Review

One of several brands of low-priced clarinets designed chiefly for the student market, the Eldon ECL475 is manufactured from hard rubber rather than plastic or wood. As with hard-rubber clarinets generally, the tone is slightly darker than a wooden or high-grade ABS plastic instrument, especially in the upper register--which is a challenge for most beginners. Overall, the quality of the Eldon's tone, the action of its keywork, the evenness of its finish (the hard-rubber joints, barrel and bell have a matte black finish with a slight wood-grained appearance) and the consistency of its sound throughout its range are all basically good. The manufacturing quality, on the other hand, is inconsistent: the keys are somewhat soft, the plating on some of the keys is uneven, and several of the tone holes have machining marks that could affect how well they seal, depending on the size of the player's fingertips. That said, the low-priced Eldon is a reliable clarinet for beginners, and an affordable investment for most parents.
