EBS Metal Drive High Gain Bass Distortion Overdrive Pedal Review

For many, many years I've been using an old ProCo "Rat" distortion device - which was really made for guitar - for bass distortion. It's a good device, but it does suck a lot of low end out of the signal. Not a problem in recording, or if one always has it on, but difficult to switch in and out without changing amp settings. In my current band, I want to be able to cut the distortion in and out in the middle of a song, so I was looking for a technical solution.

I love my EBS bass amp, so based on that and the reputation of their stomp boxes in general, I ordered the Metal Drive unit, without ever having tested it in a store. It's not cheap, but it's very good. Lots of good bass energy under the distortion/sustain. For a while, I rehearsed with both the Metal Drive and the Rat in the signal chain, to A/B them, but ultimately put the Rat away.

Like all EBS gear, it's very solidly built.

I only give it 4 stars out of 5 because even though it has 3 modes and 2 controls, it seems like the filter circuit that emphasizes the bass and rolls off the high frequency partials is always in effect, so you *can't* get a really exaggerated lead-guitar-like sound out of it, the way you can with simpler pedals like the Rat. I'd rather have that bottom-preservation circuit permanently on than not have it at all, but it would be really nice if it could be disabled as well.

Just received it today, love it! I bought it to replace one that my son broke, and I can't thank him enough! It looks and sounds amazing, and like the first reviewer said, the pic doesn't come close to doing it justice.

Eden USM-D210XLT4-U David Series XLT Bass Cabinet Review

Ok, to be fair, I don't have a wide experience with bass cab sound but I think this thing sounds awesome, with the bass enhance knob pulled on my Eden WTX-264 the whole house shakes. I love playing through it. The good thing about this 210 is that it's 4ohm and hence gets the most possible power out of your amp while not being a big unit (fits on the back seat of my Corolla), and this 210 has a lot of bottom end without being muddy. That said, it is bloody heavy and awkward for a small bloke like me to get off the ground. Once up it's ok, but the first part of the lift is quite difficult. I make sure I limber up first. Sometimes I wonder if I should have gone for a cab with Neo drivers but Eden say the box is heavy because of all the bracing which give it it's awesome sound. Because of the weight, the plastic handles should have been build a bit stronger though, I can feel the plastic flex when I lift it by just one handle. The thing that was most pleasing was the price plus postage on Amazon was phenomenally low and it's delivery to Australia was quick too. Buying on line probably cut the cost in half!

Egnater Rebel-20 20 Watt Tube Amp Head Review

I have to agree with the previous reviewer. This little amp sure packs a wallop, and it won't break your wallet in the process. I have owned or used many different types of amps, from Marshall JCM 800/900/Plexi, Fender Hot Rods, Carvin Legacy (great amp by the way), Soldano, THD Univalve, Crate Palomino, Groove Tubes Soulo, Mesa Double/Triple Rectifier and even some boutique handwired amps, and the Rebel 20 is about the most versatile amp I've come across. It sounds fantastic and lets you get that smooth, overdriven brown sound crunch at manageable sound levels. If you're on a quest for that perfect tone, I would definitely start here. You may not look anywhere else.

Before I bought this I tried out the Vox Nightrain (so fizzy and noisy when driven hard - yuck!), Jet City Soldano head (nice, but not as nice as the Rebel) and the Orange Tiny Terror. I felt the Rebel was the best sounding of the bunch and probably the best low wattage amp on the market right now. This amp far outperforms amps many times more expensive, and even holds its own against hand wired boutique models. The only real downside to this amp is that it doesn't stay clean very far into the gain knob rotation before starting to overdrive. If you're doing music that requires a nice clean tone at higher volumes, then this amp probably won't cut it. But if you want that classic crunch and overdrive that only a fully opened up tube amp can provide, then this amp will do very nicely. It saturates like a plexi, but at much lower volumes. And for those concerned that it won't be able to keep up with a drummer in a live situation, let me just say those 20 watts are LOUD! Your ears will be ringing for sure, and you'll be all the happier for it.
