This was my first Fender purchase, so I did my homework and decided on the maple fret board instead of the rosewood due it playing clearer and faster. Being left-handed does not afford me much opportunity to "test drive" many guitars, but Fender is such an iconic name in guitars, I had no fears that I would be disappointed. This is my 7th guitar and no two play exactly the same. The first thing that I noticed on the Fender was that the strings run much closer to the body of the guitar, which is likely why the pick guard extends beneath the strings, as opposed to my Gibson or my Epiphone. I'm still getting used to adjusting how much of the pick I use, because I initially kept bottoming out as the pick hit the guard. I will admit that it really threw me off at first, but then I learned to adjust to the Strat.
None of my other guitars have a tremelo (whammy) bar and that was a real selling feature for me. So right away, I started looking for songs like Hanky Panky by Tommy James and The Shondells, just so I would have an excuse to use it. I could not be happier with this guitar for that unique 50's and 60's sound. My Gibson Les Paul has much richer and fuller tones, but the Fender Strat has a sound all of its own that the Gibson cannot quite duplicate. The right tool for the right job.
