Product Description

The EBS MetalDrive deliver pure, mean, metal distortion for bass - and beyond. EBS MetalDrive deliver high-gain distortion for use in modern metal music, and other music styles that call for a mean distorted sound. It is based on a customized MultiDrive made for bass player John Moyer of Disturbed. The Black Label Pedals provide great tone for guitar, keyboard and other instruments as well. Smooth working effects with very little or no noise and a fat tone that keep the bottom solid.

EBS Metal Drive High Gain Bass Distortion Overdrive Pedal Review

For many, many years I've been using an old ProCo "Rat" distortion device - which was really made for guitar - for bass distortion. It's a good device, but it does suck a lot of low end out of the signal. Not a problem in recording, or if one always has it on, but difficult to switch in and out without changing amp settings. In my current band, I want to be able to cut the distortion in and out in the middle of a song, so I was looking for a technical solution.

I love my EBS bass amp, so based on that and the reputation of their stomp boxes in general, I ordered the Metal Drive unit, without ever having tested it in a store. It's not cheap, but it's very good. Lots of good bass energy under the distortion/sustain. For a while, I rehearsed with both the Metal Drive and the Rat in the signal chain, to A/B them, but ultimately put the Rat away.

Like all EBS gear, it's very solidly built.

I only give it 4 stars out of 5 because even though it has 3 modes and 2 controls, it seems like the filter circuit that emphasizes the bass and rolls off the high frequency partials is always in effect, so you *can't* get a really exaggerated lead-guitar-like sound out of it, the way you can with simpler pedals like the Rat. I'd rather have that bottom-preservation circuit permanently on than not have it at all, but it would be really nice if it could be disabled as well.
