Length:: 0:16 MinsUPDATE, September 25, 2013....
This past Sunday, I was recording, and decided to try my 2007 Fender American Standard Telecaster as well. I was quite surprised to discover that (even though both Teles have the same pickup height and action the way I like them, plus identical string sets- Rotosound light/heavy .009-.046 installed the same day, plus maple necks on both, played through the same amp at the same settings), the American Deluxe was noticeably louder!! And not just with the S-1 switch pushed but in the usual middle, as well as separate bridge and neck positions!! I was definitely not expecting this very pleasant surprise, and I recall no literature by Fender mentioning this possibility! Very cool indeed!
Original review....
Not only a great-looking guitar (though I think I'd prefer a 'plain' standard white pickguard), but a great player as well! I tried one in my local 'Long and McQuade' music store in the Toronto area, before ordering the one pictured here (it wasn't in stock at the time) and I swear, it rivals my beloved 2007 American Standard Tele!
Some people claim that the Standard has more bite and twang, and that may have been true at one time, but (to my ears anyway), this has all the bite, twang and snarl, but with the added benefit of no noise from single coil pickups, like I get on my American Standard- the '60 cycle hum' I think it's know as. If my ears are decieving me just a little, then all one need do is turn up the treble a wee bit on their amp if a slight difference is noticed.
I also love the S1 push switch on the volume control for that extra bit of 'oomph', which is nice for a sort of Fender/Gibson-ish boost when using distortion, which reminds me a bit of my Gibson Les Paul, or even just for a fourth tone and boost in clean mode.
Not only that, but because of the tapered neck, string bending is easier, and feels more natural, higher up the neck.
Many people also like the Strat-like upper contour fit of the back of the body for comfort as well, but I prefer the traditional look. (Actually, since originally writing this some months ago, I've begun to really like the tapered look, as well as noticing that it's lighter in weight!)
Though I may be overlooking a few other benefits, the final thing I wanted to mention is it's high quality, but reasonably light and sturdy, hard shell case.
