The HB-4 Bass Guitar features a 44mm Mahogany body and a Maple Bolt-on Neck with neck plate. The fingerboard is made from Resinator wood with Hagstrom 6mm Pearl Dot Position Marks. Resinator wood is more stable than any standard wood product. It is the perfect fingerboard material in that it eliminates wolf tones or hot spots, and it has a smooth, articulate sound. The H-Expander Truss Rod provides tension at either end and running the entire length of the neck, and the rigid yet lightweight alloy truss rod allows for a very low action and thin neck, two factors that were instrumental in earning Hagstrom its reputation as the world ��s fastest playing guitar. I have a few decades of experience with basses of various kinds. The Hagstroms got me interested and I took a flyer on the cream/white version of the HB-4. What I found in this bass is:

- Solid build
- Strong low end when playing
- Quality finish work
- Nice paint
- Extremely high quality hardware
- Unusual, very nice tuners that hold their settings
- Unique bridge design with wide range of adjustment

The bridge may be the most unusual component of the bass. It has a number of pieces and set screws, and it takes time to adjust both saddle height and intonation, but once set, they're not going to move or creep. The minimum saddle height is higher than many bridges because the saddle itself screws up and town in a round base. I think the bridge is a better than average design for those who do not require a quick-change approach for their strings.

The fit and finish is above average, and I couldn't find a fault anywhere on the bass in terms of paint, frets or hardware. The mahogany body of the bass is a bit heavier than I expected, but this also provides good balance when it's on my shoulder. It's definitely not as heavy as many long-scale instruments.

I have a slight fret buzz in the last two frets and am playing with adjustment. I think that my bass may require a very thin shim to allow uniform action all along the neck, but that's hardly unusual in a bolt-on neck instrument. All it requires is a good setup, which should be part of buying any bass and having it fully ready to play. The other review mentions some buzz, but I suspect all that reviewer needed was to have a good setup done on the bass.

The short scale and relatively thin neck make it a very playable, quick instrument and I enjoy that aspect of it. I'm not quite as sold on the six-position switch for the pickups, which needs some contact cleaner. The six positions seem like about three more than I really need, but that's not a problem - I don't need to use the ones which don't appeal to me, and they may be handy for another musician. The other pots on the bass work fine; it's just the pickup selector switch which needs cleaning. The pickups seem reasonably hot, and I have no trouble getting a strong rock sound from this bass.

All in all, the sound, quality control, fit and finish on this bass are fully equal to that of any standard Fender that I have seen in a long time, but at a lower price! The instrument has a distinctive sound, a powerful low end and plays well. It's a keeper!
