Hohner 270BX-E Super Chromonica, Key Of E Major Review

I've had this Chromatic in the Key of E for a few months already. It's my second Hohner Chromatic. My first one was a 270 in the Key of A.

I'm still pretty new at playing Chromatics, and Harmonicas in general. I've been at it for a little over 7 months. But I do practice daily.

It took a little bit of breaking in this Harmonica, but as time went on, it either got better, or I've improved a lot in my own playing. The sound of a Chromatic is great. More powerful than a Diatonic. I have close to 30 Diatonics already. The slide works nice and easy on these 270s. I do need to improve on my use of the slide though. Otherwise, I end up playing Chromatics like they're just another Diatonic.

I highly recommend these 270s, and I would like to get one in every Key that's available.

Perhaps it is not reasonable to claim any harmonica as perfect. But for my taste, this is as near to perfect as a harmonica can be. We all have our preferences with respect to intonation, loudness, sensitivity, and so forth. And of course, whether you are playing by yourself or in a band, whether lead or accompaniment, one style may be more appropriate than another. I am a solo player and strictly amature. But I have several high-end harmonicas from Zuzuki, Seydel, and of course Hohner. Each of the others seem to have one or more aspects of quirkiness. The Seydel seems to need very frequent adjuisting and was more like a "kit" when it came out of the box. The Suzukies are flawless in every detail, but not so much volume. The Marine Band Crossover is loud and fantastic but requires more adjustment than I would have expected.

The MeisterKlasse? Wow, if I had to limit myself to JUST ONE (yes, I know that is unthinkable), it would be this one. The tone has a great balance between volume and character. The construction and quality of materials is second to none. It is also fairly compact in size which I like a lot.

I carry this with me everywhere. One good idea I found was to cuse a cut-down case from a pair of reading glasses I found on the garage floor at a friend's house. The material is like that of a padded wet suit and offers both compactness and a bit of protection against bumps. I cut is shorter and re-stitched the top. Works better than anything available for purchase.

Hohner 580BX-E , Key of E Review

I got this in a Key of E from Amazon at an insanely low price - less than you usually pay for a Special 20. It has a nice weight, and you can tell it's built very well. I took off one star because one side of the Hohner box wasn't sealed, so I worry that someone else had their lips wrapped around it. It didn't show any signs of use or have any mustache hairs caught in the reeds, so who knows. For what I paid, I'm willing to chance it.

I have several different types of harmonicas: Special 20, Big River, Golden Melody, Pro Harp, Lee Oskar, and a Suzuki Promaster. I'd compare this Meisterklasse to the Suzuki in terms of overall quality of build, but the Hohner definitely plays better. The Suzuki I have is A Major, so that may be the issue.

The Meisterklasse line usually sells for around $100 give or take. I probably wouldn't buy another at that price, but it may be worth it to you. The Hohner marketing marterial says Huey Lewis plays this model, so I'm sure it's a great overall line of harmonica.

The included case seems to be the same one as my Hohner Pro Harp, which is a much less expensive, but still very nice, harp. I'd think for one of their higher end models, they'd throw in a nicer case.

I really recommend it to hose more serious players. The clip on transmitter can be placed on your waist belt. I bought this item thinking that it was made in germany like many hohner items are. Not the case MADE IN CHINA. The jack where you plug in your cord broke the first time I tried to use it. Had to take it apart and repair the jack which had three stripped out screws already. Obviously someone had tried to fix this previously and failed. The sound is terrible and it is not a quality instrument.
